Uncalled for Incredulity

Here is another of several responses I have written. I am including it though it reiterates points that I have made, but it takes a little different tone and puts the responsibility on your shoulders to support your claim:

Perhaps the reason you can’t understand why I don’t see misogyny as more powerful than Warren is that you refuse to listen to what I am saying. You have not provided one sentence that supports your claim. You have not even stated why you think that Warren is too weak to overcome misogyny in her own party. You have not even explained for a handful of words how the current climate that supports women in government and is responsible for record numbers of females in office suddenly failed for Warren. You are not participating in any discussion other than to express some manufactured incredulity because you are too busy signaling your acceptance of this irrational notion that women are too weak and pathetic to overcome misogyny. Why do you think that? What makes you think so poorly of women that they simply cannot overcome misogyny? Who is being the misogynist here, Mr. Virtue?

If you don’t use the pathetic scapegoat of misogyny and you instead look for other reasons why Warren lost, you might be more prepared for the next opportunity. Or have you given up since misogyny is so powerful to you? It pisses me off that you honestly think that people hate women so much that they refused to vote for Warren. Is this because your friends hate women? I don’t know a single person that hates women so much that it is the only consideration that they use to determine who they are voting for. And I know some sexist pigs. Enlighten me oh virtuous one. Help me to find all of the misogynistic Democrats whose only consideration was Warren’s gender. And explain to me how so many of them are women themselves.

You fail to account for the fact that Hillary had the same baked in misogyny yet she won the primary. She didn’t even have the momentum of the women’s movement behind her like we do now. Why is Warren not being held to the same standard that Hillary was? I mean, after all, Hillary beat Bernie why couldn’t Warren get close to Bernie or Biden?

We elected more than 100 women to office in 2018. Where was your big bad unsurmountable misogyny when that happened?

Warren didn’t just lose by a point or two, she lost by a terrible margin. What happened to Democrats that they suddenly changed their mind from supporting women to hating Warren? Does this mean that now that you have established that Democrats hate women, the women’s movement is over? Does that mean that misogyny won and you are giving up hope on women?

Or could it be that some other reason was the basis for why women voted for Biden as well as men? Women didn’t suddenly hate Warren because she was a woman. That’s ridiculous.

But I can hear you gearing up to say that voters took inventory of their perception that a woman couldn’t win the general election and though they are not misogynists themselves, the bigger threat of misogyny made them choose Biden over Warren. Bullshit.

All you have to do is put your persecution complex away for long enough to look at the issues. This is what informs voters. Issues and where a candidate stands on various issues. If, after you go through all of the issues, you are torn between a male candidate and a female candidate, sexism or gender bias may get you to vote male, but it’s not misogyny and it is likely the last consideration made when selecting a candidate.

  • Warren’s plans to increase taxes and establish government control over your healthcare decisions frightens voters on both sides more than her gender.
  • Warren’s plans to tax the rich is terrifying to conservatives because the top 1% already pay 20% of the entire tax base for the country. Placing the burden on the rich to pay more than 20% of the total taxes seems like an unfair burden to some.
  • Warren’s plans for border control run the risk of opening the borders with Mexico which they think will cost American’s jobs.
  • Warren’s gun control plans could make conservatives give up their guns.
  • Warren’s plans for 2-for-1 abortions paid by the government are morally incompatible with some voters and an unfair expense for others.
  • Warren’s general plans to change government from the ground up terrifies anyone who is actually doing well at the moment.
  • Waren’s plans to reward lazy, drug-addicted homeless leaches using conservative’s tax money seems unreasonable to conservatives.

These are all policies and plans of Warrens from the perspective of a conservative voter. Can’t you see that her vagina has nothing to do with how offensive her platform is? People hated Warren for the same reason Wallstreet called her Enemy Number One. Not because she was a woman, but because she stood to upend Wallstreet and that’s terrifying to them. Democrats didn’t subscribe to all of those beliefs about Warren and they don’t hate women either. That’s insulting to anyone who didn’t vote for Warren. It expresses a general oversimplification of the issues that is a common refrain amongst the vilest deplorables in this country: Trump supporters.

All of the same reasons that Warren lost so did Bernie and in case you forgot, Bernie is a white male. Like our mutual friend said, “you can’t separate gender from politics” well the same is true here. It wasn’t misogyny for Bernie and it wasn’t for Warren. They both lost support because of the liberal platform.

And to be clear, I didn’t even go over the painful reasons that Warren was believed to be unfit for government by a lot of voters. I have more than amply explained that no matter how you look at it, there is no possible way to rationally support the hyperbolic notion that misogyny is the sole reason Warren lost.

So bury your head in the sand and believe whatever you want to believe. Revel in the unnecessary pain that everyone you know hates women and that the vast majority of this country hates women. Fun. But be prepared to put your money where your mouth is for the General Election. If you are such an adamant believer in the overwhelming power of misogyny, you had best better actively persuade Biden to select a male running mate.

If you support a female running mate, based on your belief that misogyny is so bad that it cost Warren the election, having a female on the ticket dooms us to four more years of Trump. So I look forward to watching you explain your way out of your belief when some powerful woman like Stacy Abrams or even Warren is selected for the ticket. Lest you be a hypocrite, I trust you will strongly oppose a female on the ticket because to do elsewise would guarantee a loss do only to misogyny.

The final point I want to make is that I understand how it may seem like misogyny. I understand how easy and comforting it feels to blame a blanket ideology for your candidate’s failure. I was tempted to do the same for Pete. But it’s time to brush ourselves off and put on our big gender neutral pants and regain our momentum moving forward. Please quit painting me as someone who hates women because I refuse to believe that women are too weak to overcome historical sexism in our country. I don’t go on your facebook page and discount your opinion without having any real support for my own opinion. It is not unreasonable to ask the same from you.
